History of West Jordan, Utah

Mormon settlers led by Brigham Young were the first to inhabit this land in 1847. They viewed this land as their Zion, therefore naming the river flowing nearby, Jordan River. In 1849, the city of West Jordan was founded on the western edge of the Jordan River. Archibald Gardner, a Mormon settler, built various mills and houses in West Jordan. In fact, he constructed one of the city's first sawmills. Today, the historic structures have been renovated into a specialty shopping district referred to as Gardner Village. In West Jordan's early history, the community relied heavily on agriculture, mills and mining activity. Today, West Jordan is among Utah's fastest growing cities. From the 1970s until today West Jordan has experienced a phenomenal growth. The city's Jordan Landing was selected by Sears as its first Sears Grand location. Due to the city's rapid population growth, the following projects are under construction: completion of Jordan Landing, a new main campus for Salt Lake Community College, expansion of Jordan Valley Hospital, Midvale's current transit-oriented development on the east border in the Jordan River bed, and several other renovating projects.
